The Holy Innocents

Gospel, Mt 2:13-18

13 After they had left, suddenly the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, 'Get up, take the child and his mother with you, and escape into Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, because Herod intends to search for the child and do away with him.'
14 So Joseph got up and, taking the child and his mother with him, left that night for Egypt,
15 where he stayed until Herod was dead. This was to fulfil what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: I called my son out of Egypt.
16 Herod was furious on realising that he had been fooled by the wise men, and in Bethlehem and its surrounding district he had all the male children killed who were two years old or less, reckoning by the date he had been careful to ask the wise men.
17 Then were fulfilled the words spoken through the prophet Jeremiah:
18 A voice is heard in Ramah, lamenting and weeping bitterly: it is Rachel weeping for her children, refusing to be comforted because they are no more.

 The Coventry Carol

Lullay, Thou little tiny Child,
By, by, lully, lullay.
Lullay, Thou little tiny Child.
By, by, lully, lullay.

O sisters, too, how may we do,
For to preserve this day;
This poor Youngling for whom we sing,
By, by, lully, lullay.

Herod the King, in his raging,
Charged he hath this day;
His men of might, in his own sight,
All children young, to slay.

Then woe is me, poor Child, for Thee,
And ever mourn and say;
For Thy parting, nor say nor sing,
By, by, lully, lullay.

Merry Christmas!

Gospel, Jn 1:1-18

1 In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God.
2 He was with God in the beginning.
3 Through him all things came into being, not one thing came into being except through him.
4 What has come into being in him was life, life that was the light of men;
5 and light shines in darkness, and darkness could not overpower it.
6 A man came, sent by God. His name was John.
7 He came as a witness, to bear witness to the light, so that everyone might believe through him.
8 He was not the light, he was to bear witness to the light.
9 The Word was the real light that gives light to everyone; he was coming into the world.
10 He was in the world that had come into being through him, and the world did not recognise him.
11 He came to his own and his own people did not accept him.
12 But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believed in his name
13 who were born not from human stock or human desire or human will but from God himself.
14 The Word became flesh, he lived among us, and we saw his glory, the glory that he has from the Father as only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.
15 John witnesses to him. He proclaims: 'This is the one of whom I said: He who comes after me has passed ahead of me because he existed before me.'
16 Indeed, from his fullness we have, all of us, received -- one gift replacing another,
17 for the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth have come through Jesus Christ.
18 No one has ever seen God; it is the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made him known.

      Week in Review: November 29 - December 5, 2010

Workbooks completed, science done (no pictures this week since it was incorporated into bathtime), and Advent is well underway.  It's a little startling to realize that we're already two months past our start date.  It doesn't seem that long ago!

As we're nearing the end of two of our workbooks and as we're in Advent and our weeks are filling with activities in preparation for Christmas, this seems like a good time to take a break from school.  More and more, I am leaning toward a year-round approach so that we can have greater flexibility with our schedule and work around any surprises as they spring up.  I also like the idea of being extra-focused on the religious holidays.

So, my next post will be our normal schedule for the week.  After that, we'll be on hiatus until mid-January or so.  I may post some pictures here and there of our holiday projects, too!

      Week in Review: November 22 - November 28, 2010

Henry completed all of his workbook assignments.  I'm pretty excited about this past week because we moved beyond simply tracing shapes and on to actually drawing them.  He's getting better each day!

Of course, science was a lot of fun.  We had a lovely, long discussion about why things float and sink.  Henry's original hypotheses about which items would float and which would sink were about 50% correct.  After the experiment, this improved to about 75%.

Oliver was pretty interested in this experiment, too.  You can just see him peeking around the high chair.

Sunday's assignment was moved to today.  Our parish has Eucharistic Adoration on Mondays, so it was a good day to visit.  We walked all around the church and I talked to Henry about all of the different items: the Baptismal font, the Stations of the Cross, the altar, the Advent wreath, stained glass windows, and the Tabernacle and the Host placed out for adoration.

      Happy Thanksgiving!

We hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving Day today. Here is the first Thanksgiving proclamation, written by President George Washington in the Massachusetts Centinel in 1789:
WHEREAS it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favour; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend to the people of the United States a DAY OF PUBLICK THANSGIVING and PRAYER, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:"

NOW THEREFORE, I do recommend and assign THURSDAY, the TWENTY-SIXTH DAY of NOVEMBER next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed;-- for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish Constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted;-- for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge;-- and, in general, for all the great and various favours which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also, that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions;-- to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us); and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

GIVEN under my hand, at the city of New-York, the third day of October, in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and eighty-nine.

      (signed) G. Washington

      Week in Review: November 15 - November 21, 2010

Henry completed all of his workbook assignments. We continue to work our way through the collection of Beatrix Potter's tales. Henry has mastered identifying letters. He is able to correctly identify upper-case letters every time. Numbers are a little harder; he sometimes confuses '3' for 'E' and '6' for '9' and vice versa. Not so much that I think he's dyslexic or anything. When he stops to look instead of rushing, he's able to correct himself immediately.

Our science project this week was a blast. Water, fire, Daddy; what could be better?

      Our materials:

      And one happy scientist:

Watching Daddy heat up a bolt:

Using the hot bolt to melt a hole in the bottom of a soda bottle:

A vertical row of holes in a milk jug:

A horizontal row of holes in another milk jug:

Controlling the water flow by covering and uncovering a hole in the lid of the soda bottle:

Watching the differences in the streams as the water comes down:

Making the different jets merge together:

Lots of fun!  Henry kept playing with the jugs and water for quite some time after our official experiment ended.  He's really enjoying this unit on water.

      Week in Review: November 8 - November 14, 2010

Henry completed all of his workbook pages for the week.

For Science Saturday, we began our day of exploring liquids and solids by... baking!  Since our science experiment for the day involved suspending solids in a liquid, I thought baking a pecan pie would be a great (and tasty) start.  I will always remember my 10th grade chemistry teacher using the directions for baking brownies to help us learn how to balance chemical equations.

      Our results:

      Yum!

While the pie was baking, we got started on our actual experiment.  Although the book called for making a necklace, I decided to modify a bit and use a canning jar instead.  I wanted Henry to get a good look at what was inside and I didn't think a film canister would be large enough.

Materials - Canning jar and plastic lid, water, crayon bits, glitter glue:

Pouring the water into the jar:

      Adding the crayon bits:

Crayon bits in the jar of water:

Adding glitter glue (a lot easier than using loose glitter!):

Examining the particles in the water:

      Shaking things up:

      Making a tornado:

After inspecting the jar and its contents and shaking and swishing and stirring it all about, we put the jar in the freezer.  Later that evening, Henry was excited to see that the liquid water had now become solid water, AKA ice!

We left the jar on the counter overnight and Henry rushed down in the morning to see what happened.  He was amazed that it had turned back to liquid water.  After this experiment, Henry was confidently pointing out liquids and solids throughout the house.

Sunday, Henry helped his daddy wash the car and got a lot of practice following directions.  And also dealing with the consequences of not following directions.  I feel that this "lesson" will continue for years...

      Week in Review: November 1 - November 7, 2010

Henry completed all of his workbook pages for the week.  I can definitely see that he's becoming more proficient at tracing his letters.  He continues to refine his coloring skills, also.  He's not quite all in the lines, but he's getting there.

This week, I purchased a dry erase board for our schoolroom.  Henry is enjoying practicing his letters on the board.  He was able to write an "H" and an "I" on his own.  He was also pleased to find out that together they spelled "hi."

Our nightly bedtime reading is becoming a highly anticipated event.  We are still allowing Henry to choose a story of his own and then also reading a story from The Complete Tales of Peter Rabbit. We've read:
      • The Tale of Peter Rabbit
      • The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin (of course!)
      • The Tailor of Gloucester
      • The Tale of Benjamin Bunny
      • The Tale of Two Bad Mice
      • The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkles
      • The Tale of the Pie and the Patty-Pan
Some keep his attention more than others, but he always enjoys looking at Potter's beautiful illustrations.

On Saturday afternoon, we dug the apple, lettuce, and Styrofoam out of the Garbage Viewer and had a look.

      The results:

Henry pronounced the apple "squishy," the lettuce leaf "soft," and the Styrofoam "the same."  I was actually getting a little nervous with this one because it took until yesterday to see any kind of change in anything.  I suppose that's why you're supposed to turn  your compost bins frequently.

Saturday's science experiment was fun.  It was too cold (!) to play in the water table outside, so we used the kitchen counter instead.

Seeing the water take the shape of each different container:

Pouring water into a spray bottle:

Spraying the water on the counter and seeing it spread out:

Letting the water drip off of the ends of his fingers:

Putting water in to a glove (he thought this one was extremely funny):

His conclusion?  "Water changes shapes."  Yes, indeed.

      Week in Review: October 25 - October 31, 2010

Henry completed all of his workbook assignments, all the while whispering "do my best work" as he toiled away. We were able to read a new story, "Benjamin Bunny," although "Squirrel Nutkin" is still number one on the request list. For Henry, it gets more funny every time.

Saturday was quite busy. Henry and I got up early to make a batch of dinner rolls and an apple pie. It was our first apple pie and, although it leaked a little on one side, we were very proud of the results!

Later in the day, Henry carved pumpkins with Daddy:

      The results:

We were so busy on Saturday that the creation of our Garbage Viewer was pushed back to Sunday.  Here are the subjects of our experiment:

Henry filling the bowl with dirt:

      What they look like today:

For Sunday, Henry completed his workbook pages while I read the story of Creation to him from our Bible for Young Catholics.

After he colored the different pictures of the Creation story, we made a little book to put the pictures in:

Friday night, Henry was able to recite the "Glory Be" all by himself.  Now he knows three prayers!

Tonight is Halloween and Henry is very excited to go trick-or-treating.  It should be a lot of fun.

      Tuesday, October 26, 2010

      Score!

I love a good deal, especially when it's for school supplies.  Kids.woot.com is a great "deal-a-day" site for a wide variety of children's products.  Today's deal is for a Thames and Kosmos science kit or electronics kit.  A quick price search on Google shows that these usually go for about $80 or $90, but Woot has it for $39.99, including shipping.

The kits are for older kids, but I grabbed a Fun and Fundamentals Core Science
because it's such a good deal.  I'll tuck it away in our school cabinet to have for later on.  135 different science experiments await!

      Week in Review: October 18 - October 24, 2010

After a busy weekend, we're catching up today!

Henry completed all of his workbook assignments with continued emphasis on always doing his "best work."  "Squirrel Nutkin" remains the favorite.  This week, we'll try to get him to branch out a little bit, maybe some of the poetry from A Child's Garden of Verses.

The Bug Hotel was a partial success.

      Henry, readying for the dig:

      Placing the cup:

Setting the bait (Henry chose Froot Loops):

      The results (a few ants):

      Jane's baptism went beautifully!

I can't say that Henry paid close attention to the ceremony.  He was very excited to see some of his friends at the church and wanted to play instead.  However, he enjoyed coloring the pages from his workbook and was able to circle the items he saw.  We continue to include the "Glory Be" in his nighttime prayers and I think he will have it memorized soon.

      Sunday
Who Am I?, lesson 8: God's Family - Baptism (We're skipping ahead on this one because it will go hand in hand with our main activity this Sunday: Jane's baptism!)
      • Concepts of Faith:  All baptized people are members of God's family.  Through the sacrament of baptism, we receive the gift of grace.  Grace is a share in God's own life.
      • Activities: Attend Jane's baptism.  Look at pictures from Henry's baptism together.

      Week in Review: October 11 - October 17, 2010

Henry completed all of his workbook assignments for the week.  Our emphasis was on "always do your best work."  At the end of each page, we looked over all of the letters or shapes that were traced and picked out the one that looked the nicest.  While Henry was tracing, I encouraged him to take it slow and do his best.

Henry's favorite Good Books story is still "Squirrel Nutkin."  He is beginning to memorize parts of it and continues to find Nutkin's tail loss hilarious.  Last night, he realized that we have another Peter Rabbit book, one that we've had since he was a baby: Peter Rabbit Touch and Feel.  He was very excited to tie them together, but was disappointed that Nutkin did not make an appearance in the other book.

Saturday's science lesson, Circle of Earth, was fun.  Henry pored over the grass with his magnifying glass and made some good observations about what he saw (green grass, a purple flower with a yellow center, ants, spiderweb).  The find of the day was an abandoned snail shell, which we collected:

Sunday, after Mass, we completed Henry's first lesson in Who Am I?.  He colored a shamrock (to represent the three Persons of God), and put cards in order showing the steps to make the Sign of the Cross.  I recited the Glory Be to him and he repeated it back to me line by line.

        Week in Review: October 4 - October 10, 2010

Henry completed all of his assigned workbook pages with great excitement on Wednesday and just a little prodding on Friday.

Perseverance is a must, I'm finding.  Our story time is a great example of this.  Henry has always enjoyed reading selections from the collection of Disney books that my husband's mother saved for him.  However, he was less than enthused when told to pick a book from our Good Books list.  More accurately, he didn't want anything to do with any of them.

I wound up negotiating two stories for the evening: one of his picks and one of mine.  We read "Peter Rabbit" on Wednesday evening: uninterested.  We read "Squirrel Nutkin" on Friday evening; uninterested.  Or, so I thought.  Last night, Henry retrieved The Complete Tales of Peter Rabbit on his own and requested "Nutkin."  I suppose there is something appealing to a three year-old boy about a naughty squirrel having his tail pulled off by a crotchety old owl.

Saturday was a great success.  We began our day by baking up a storm.  Henry and I made a loaf of honey wheat sandwich bread (in the bread machine), a pumpkin pie (and my first attempt at a homemade crust), three loaves of pumpkin bread, two loaves of banana bread, and a batch of dinner rolls.  Henry was very proud of the results.  And so was I!

In the afternoon, we prepared for our science walk by loading Henry's backpack with crayons, paper, a plastic sandwich bag, and a magnifying glass.  I taped a piece of clear contact paper to a dry-erase board to use as a specimen collector.  Then, with Jane in a sling, Oliver with a snack, Henry with his pack, and my husband with the camera, we set out into the great outdoors.

        Henry's first find, a dragonfly:

Inspecting a pile of dirt left by something excavating a tunnel in the yard:

Collecting a flower specimen (and eating a dinner roll at the same time):

Looking for bugs on a piece of wood:

Checking out some seed pods on a plant:

Making a rubbing of a leaf:

We also listened for nature sounds.  Henry pointed out the wind rustling the leaves in the trees, birds chirping, and dogs barking.  He smelled blades of grass and flowers and pointed out the different colors around us.

The science walk was a lot of fun for the whole family.  Henry is already asking to do it again and, for now, science is his favorite subject.
